Celtic Solstice Part 4

Part 4 - Bonnie Hunter's Celtic Solstice Mystery Quilt 2013

This is my first Mystery Quilt and I'm really excited about how its turning out.

I'm a bit late to the game of posting progress reports, so this is Part 1 - 3. Part 4 will have to wait till we get back from vacation as Santa hasn't realized I want a featherweight yet ... LOL

I've learned so much, from the tri-rec's to the chevrons and Inklingo's way for the HST's! I am having to hand piece the final seam on the pinwheels, but with the other hand piecing I've been doing, I'm much more sure of myself.

Have a Merry Christmas and a Great New Year!!

Inklingo

My Project On The Road

This is all about Inklingo. Its what got me started back on my sewing kick after becoming an "empty nester". I was surfing the internet one day just doing the typical drooling over quilt pictures and ran across Linda Franz. Its like a light bulb went off ... I just had to do it!

I've been working on this project for a month of so, venturing into my first ever hand piecing since sitting on my grandmother's lap. I've got all the pieces cut out and I can't rave enough about how much her site has helped my enthusiasm.

I first got her FREE patterns available to give it a try. From there, I saw a pattern I just fell in love with (typical story for me!). I, of course, didn't have any fabric ... don't cough ... so I purchased this scrumptious blue and yellow print, absolutely made for one another!

So while the DH drives the 5 hours to our vacation get away, I'm going to be happily stitching away.

My Own Blue Heaven

My Own Blue Heaven

When I first stumbled upon Quiltville and did the obvious search for free patterns, I ran across this wonderful quilt that Bonnie Hunter called "My Blue Heaven".

My Blue Heaven by Bonnie K. Hunter

I went to our local shop and started grabbing up fat quarters. I'm not one with a large stash and this was the first time I'd even ventured into buying more fat quarters that weren't just black and white (my standard purchase on travel to places that have quilt shops).

So here is my selection, and I just can't wait!!!

And here is the finished quilt.  I reached out to Bonnie for ideas about the inside border and she helped me select the red ... I'm going to use it also in the binding when I get to that point ... another one on my list to finish.

Color Wheel Primer

All About Color

I don't know about you but I'm often challenged when it comes to knowing what colors go together.  A long time ago I ran across an F.Y.I article by David K. Small.

Let’s look at the Color Wheel in its simplest form – the Primary Colors, which are
Yellow, Red and Blue.

The Primary Colors are as far apart as they can be along the Color Wheel. Not one of them is composed of the others.

When two Primary Colors are combined the result is called a Secondary Color, see below.

The combination of red and yellow is orange, or red and blue is violet, of blue and yellow is green.  Notice that each color on the wheel now has a color directly across from it.
Colors opposite from one another are called Complementary Colors.

Two opposite (complementary) colors will make a harmonious combination with one or both of the color’s neighbors. Two colors and the complement of the color that falls between them make a pleasing combination. The color found between Violet and Green is Blue. The complement of Blue is Orange. These three colors will work together.

Two colors which contain a similar element will also work together. Blue-Green and Violet will go together since both have the color blue in them. If you select two colors where there is not a middle color between them (an even number of colors) then f9ollow the middle line between them.  A combination of those two opposite colors will work.  Green and Yellow-Orange will work with a very Purple Purple-red for instance.

I hope this helps all of us understand our color options abit easier.

My thanks to David and F.Y.I for providing such a great tutorial

Chock A Block fun

A new package arrived yesterday, a few yards of batik fabric that I had ordered. I've been wanting to get out of my comfort zone and do something in some bright colors ... boy oh boy did I ever.  Some Plumeria Marine, some Turquoise, some Gold and some Orange.

For a few weeks, I've been looking at a 9 patch variation I found over at

While the blues were okay, I was really drawn to the combination with orange and yellow.

Last night I pulled out my new AccuQuilt and sliced up the yardage into 2 1/2" strips and set to work

And after some slicing and dicing, this is how it looks

And here is the finished quilt. It came out a bit differently than the draft copy above, but I like it so much more!

I still want to try Chock-A-Block, but I have many many others I need to complete first.

Red and White ... oh my!

This is going to be my future Red and White quilt.  I found it over on HousedeVeer's

I went to check the fabric that I knew I had stashed for this quilt and found much to my surprise, 6 whole yards of each color!!

On top of that, the red is a Moda fabric from 1997!!  Who knew!

I can hardly contain my glee!  The white fabric that I purchased at the same time is white on white in a leaf/vine design, and again 6 yards.  What was I thinking??!!??
